Donald Ferris Allan Biography

Don Allan, deceased (March 2, 1927 – July 10, 2013)

Donald Ferris Allan, died at the age of 86 in Payson, Utah.  Don was one of seven children born to Henry Kirby Allan and Sarah Jane Barker on March 2, 1927 in Springville, Utah.  He attended Springville High School and Brigham Young University. Don served in the military during WWII.  In 1950 he married Thora Whiting and moved to New York City in 1951.  In NYC Don studied art at the National Academy of Art, the Art Students League, and the Salamagundi Club.  Years later he studied at the Porte Royale in Paris, France.  Don was awarded numerous prizes and medals for his painting in various art shows and competitions including the 1978 Bronze Medal from the National Academy of Art in NYC. Don often signed different subject matter with nom de plume to reflect a certain type of subject of his paintings.  Typically he would sign his more traditional fruit still life subjects with D. Hawthorn.  He also signed some of his paintings D. Nalla.
One art critic has noted, “…a desire to bring beauty and happiness into the world impels Mr. Allan to paint such beautiful paintings…”
When living in NYC, Don worked as an art restorer at Arnot Gallery on 57th Street in Manhattan. Don was also represented by Arnot Gallery. Don Allan’s paintings are available for purchase from the Arnot Gallery collection.
