Jose Puyet, Spanish artist. Deceased (Spain 1922 – 2004)

Collection sold out.
JOSE PUYET WAS INTERVIEWED AND TRANSLATED BY MARIA VINAS, THE AGENT FOR MR. HERBERT ARNOT OF THE ARNOT GALLERIES ON NOVEMBER 17, 1964:

“I WAS BORN IN MALAGA, SPAIN IN THE YEAR 1922. EVER SINCE MY CHILDHOOD I WAS VERY FOND OF ART-PAINTING.  AT SCHOOL, I REMEMBER I WAS NUMBER ONE IN DRAWING, THE FIRST IN MY CLASS.  HOWEVER, IT WAS HARD GOING, AS THE WAR BROUGHT ALONG GREAT MISFORTUNES TO MY FAMILY.  SO, MY PARENTS WERE FORCED UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES TO TAKE ME AWAY FROM SCHOOL, SO I COULD HELP THEM.  AT THE AGE OF TWENTY, I CONTINUED IN THIS MANNER, WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO PAINT PROPERLY, BUT NEVER DID I LEAVE MY DRAWING ON BORROWED TIME.  I PAINTED ALONE IN THE EVENINGS WHEN MY WORK WAS OVER UNTIL MIDNIGHT.  WHEN I WAS DRAFTED IN THE ARMY, I WAS SENT TO AFRICA.  THERE I HAD TO FIGHT MY WAY TO OBTAIN A GOOD POSITION AND I WAS LUCKY TO ACHIEVE THIS.  I PAINTED A LOT OF PORTRAITS OF GENERALS, COLONELS, COMMANDANTS AND THEIR WIVES, CHILDREN AND SO ON.  OBSERVING THE QUALITY OF MY PAINTINGS, THEY FINALLY HELPED ME IN SENDING ME TO MADRID.  ONCE I GOT THERE, THE REAL FIGHT FOR MY LIVING BEGAN.  THE PRICE I GOT FOR THESE MANY YEARS OF EFFORT AND HARD WORK IS WORTH ONLY TO MYSELF, AS NOBODY HELPED ME TO ACHIEVE THIS.  FOR I NEVER HAD ANY TEACHERS AND I STUDIED ALL BY MYSELF.  I PARTICIPATED IN SOME PRIVATE EXHIBITIONS.  NEVER HAVE I BEEN PRESENT IN SOLE OR COLLECTIVE EXHIBITS.  AND I AM SURE, THAT I WILL NEVER ATTEND IN ANY PUBLIC MEETING.  PERHAPS THIS RESERVATION I KEEP TO MYSELF IS THE SOLE REASON THAT HAS GIVEN ME MY OWN PERSONALITY AND FAME, AMONG MY FELLOW PAINTERS.  EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS NOT MY INTENTION, BUT BECAUSE I WANTED TO ACQUIRE FAME BY MY OWN EFFORT, CONTRARY TO OTHER PERSONS WHO ACQUIRE THEIR FAME BY MEANS OF A THIRD PERSON WITH SOME INFLUENCE, AND THIS WAY OBTAIN THEIR MEDALS.  MY PAINTINGS ARE EXHIBITED ALMOST IN EVERY LOCAL OR FOREIGN MUSEUM.  IT IS WORLD WIDE KNOWN AND MY WORKS ARE APPRECIATED EVERYWHERE.  PERHAPS MY WORKS ARE MORE KNOWN COMPARED TO OTHER SPANISH PAINTERS.  SOME OF THE COUNTRIES WHERE MY PAINTINGS ARE SHOWN TO THE PUBLIC ARE FRANCE, SWITZERLAND, ENGLAND, ITALY, GERMANY, JAPAN, MEXICO, BOLIVIA, GUATEMALA, VENEZUELA, ARGENTINA, HOLLAND, BELGIUM, COLOMBIA, PORTUGAL, NORTH AFRICA, SWEDEN AND ACTUALLY IN THE UNITED SATES BY COLLABORATION OF THE RESPECTFULLY HERBERT ARNOT AND FIRM, WHICH ACQUIRES MOST OF MY PAINTINGS.”      BARCELONA, NOVEMBER 17, 1964

AS JOSE PUYET AGED HIS ENCOUNTER WITH THE TERRIBLY DISABLING DISEASE, DIABETES, CLAIMED HIS ARTISTIC SKILLS AND FINALLY HIS EYE SIGHT.

Jose Puyet (April 22, 1922 – August 28, 2004).  The full name of the artist was Jose Puyet Padilla.

Puyet was born in Malaga Spain.  He was the grandson of professor Jose Padilla, a Spanish artist who began painting in the nineteenth century.  As a child, Puyet learned to paint by watching his grandfather, whose company he preferred to that of children his own age.  By the age of eight he had started working in paencils and oils.  At 20, Puyet entered the Spanish military due to WWII and was sent to the exclave of Melilla.  The experience deepened his observations of new people.  His superiors learned of his talent and would often relieve him of guard duty to allow him to create paintings of the families of the High Commanders.

Upon his return to Malaga, Puyet ventured out on his own as an inspired artist.  He moved to Madrid where he found life difficult.  He often shared rooms with truck drivers and other transients.  He purchased art supplies with the little money he had and painted various scenes of people at work. He also found work painting picures to decorate crypts and mausoleums as well as packaging of perfumes .

Puyet’s art eventually earned him a favorable reputation.  He gave his first exhibition at Carrera de San Jeronimo de Madrid.  The exhibition was a success that led to 42 more exhibitions there.  Puyet also exhibited in Barcelona at the Galleria Augusta, in Valencia, Malaga, San Francisco, New York (Arnot Gallery), Miami, Monterrey, San Mateo, Houston, Boston, Montreal, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Milan.  In 1984 Puyet was listed in thepublication of Who’s Who in Art.  In 1988 he was inducted as a member of the Real Academy of Fine Art of San Telmo in Malaga, Spain.

The paintings by Jose Puyet were in many of the finest art collections including those of:

House of Alba, a prominent Spanish aristocratic family;  House of Grimaldi;  Placido Domingo; Luis Olivo.

Jose Puyet died from a cerebral hemorrhage on August 28th, 2004 in Madrid.
