Rafael Griera Calderon was a Spanish artist who was born in 1934 in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. He signed his paintings Rafael Griera. He trained at the Escola de Belles Arts d’Olot. His style is reminiscent of artists like d’Oyly John although it is rather more abstract and he uses a brush technique rather than a palette knife.
At the age of twelve Rafael won his first prize at the Catholic Center. At eighteen he was part of the group “Crater d’Art”, along with various artists who met periodically. He was influenced by Anglada Camarassa, whom he met while in the military service in Palma de Mallorca, and the Vermeer de Delft.
Rafael Griera has exhibited extensively at both the national and international level: he exhibited at: the Sala Francesc Armengol (Olot), Quint Gallery (Palma de Mallorca), Atelier Holstein (Hamburg, Germany), Fons d’Art (Olot), Comas Gallery (Barcelona), La Pinacoteca (Barcelona), Kreisler Gallery (Madrid), Foz Gallery (Sitges), Pedreguet Art Gallery (Girona) And in the Rusinol Room (Sant Cugat del Valles). In the USA he exhibited at Arnot Gallery in New York.
